TOURNAMENT HOTEL: San Jose Hilton, 300 Almaden Blvd., San Jose.  Rooms-$99 (up to 2 adults + 2 children). Call (408) 287-2100 or (800) 345-6565 and inform them you are with CalChess Scholastics group.  The room block is being held until April 29.  If rooms are available after that date you can get the same rate.  Again please tell the Hilton that you are with CalChess Scholastics.

 

GENERAL INFO:  All players must be members of the United States Chess Federation. To check active membership please go to http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrLst.php. Non-members may join when they send in their entry form. We will run the tournament according to the USCF Rule Book and the modifications codified in 2002 for our scholastic competition  (http://www.calchess.org/modules.php?name=Information&page=02_calchess_scholastics/index.htm).  These were amended in 2003 with the following statement: ŇAt the CalChess State Scholastic Championships the analog clocks have preference in all sections.  Both players can agree to use a digital clock.  All other U.S. Chess Federation regulations applying to clock use must be followed.Ó 

 

ENTRY FEE: Checks made payable to CalChess.

Cost: K & K-3 Divisions=$35*, All Other Divisions=$40* After 5/2 all entries are $60. A special group rate is available: coaches may deduct $5 from each entry for five or more players as long as checks are received in one package with all information completed no later than Friday, 5/12.  A special late registration will be held in the San Jose Hilton's San Carlos Room between 6 and 7 PM on Friday, May 19. Registrations will be accepted on Saturday, 5/20, only after the first round has begun and a zero point bye will be given for that round. A $10 fee will be charged for any changes requested after 7:00 PM on Friday, 5/19. Only a one half round bye (half point non-rated draw) will be permitted if requested before 7 PM on Friday, 5/19. No half point byes can be requested for the final round.  Any other byes (missing a round by request) will be listed a non-rated loss. KINDERGARTEN, K-3 SECTIONS: PRIMARY SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship, PRIMARY SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 800 & PRIMARY SCHOOL NOVICE—players that have a rating under 500 or are unrated --Will be on Saturday, 5/20. 5 rounds (each player will have a maximum of 30 minutes per round: Game/30), rounds at 11:00, 12:15, LUNCH, 2:00, 3:15, 4:30. AWARDS at 6:30 PM. Please arrive 1/2 hour before the first round (10:30 AM) to check the posted list to see if your application arrived.

 

 K-6 SECTIONS: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 900 & ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NOVICE—players that have a rating under 600 or are unrated.

 

K-8 SECTIONS: JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 900 or are unrated.

 

K-12 SECTIONS: HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 1000 or are unrated:  Will be on both Saturday and Sunday, 5/20 and 5/21, 6 rounds (each player, except in the High School Varsity Division, has a maximum of 75 minutes per round: Game/75—in High School Varsity, a player has a maximum of 90 minutes per round: Game/90), Saturday rounds at 11:00, LUNCH, 2:00, 5:00. Sunday rounds at 9:00, 12:00, 3:00. AWARDS at 6:30 PM. Please arrive 1/2 hour before the first round on Saturday (10:30 AM) to check the posted list to see if your application arrived.

 

PRIZES: 

Trophies to top 20 players in each Section. In the case of a tie the US Chess Federation tiebreak method will be used. Trophies will also go to the best in each specific grade and medals to best in each rating class after Top 20 trophies are awarded for each section.  We will give only one trophy or medal per player. Trophies will be awarded to the top 8 schools in all but the Kindergarten division (team score=4 best from each school). The 4 top point recipients and their coach of first and second place teams will receive a plaque. First place Varsity Division winners will receive the title of State Champion if the reside in Northern California.  NOTE: Pins to every participant.

 

BUGHOUSE:
We will hold a Bughouse tournament on Friday night, May 19 in the San Jose Hilton San Carlos Room from 6:45 until 11 PM.  Late registration for Bughouse will be held starting at 6 PM in the San Carlos Room.  The cost for pre-entry will be $12 per team or $6 per person.  Individuals can enter without a partner and one will be assigned to them at the competition. Registration on Friday night will be $16 per team or $8 per person.  Two trophies will be awarded to the first place, second place and third place overall teams + twofor best team in K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12 grades. SIMULTANEOUS CHESS:
Play with 14 other players against National Master Eric Schiller on Saturday night from 8 to 11 PM.  NM Eric Schiller will present a 15 minute talk on improving your chess before the games begin.  If we have more then 15 people interested we will have other National Masters or International Masters for you to play against.  The cost to play against NM Eric Schiller will be $5 in advance or $10 at the site.

NOTES:

1) Late arrival forfeits will occur 30 minutes from the announced round start time or 15 minutes from the actual start time, whichever is later. 2) Players should bring chess clocks. 3) All games in K-6 Varsity, Junior High School (K-8) and High School (K-12) Sections must be recorded. Players in all other divisions are encouraged to record. 4) In the last round players from the same school may face each other to determine individual championships even if it affects team championship prospects. 5)  The tournament organizer has the right to immediately expel any player using a convention site telephone without a monitor or a TD present.  The same applies to players in the competition area using a cell  phone. 6)  Limited number of multi-colored tournament logo commemorative T-shirts for sale: Pre-purchase=$15 At tournament=$18. 7) Vendors will have chess equipment and books available for purchase at discount prices at the tournament. 8) CalChess State Scholastic sets and boards will be available for sale at tournament.

On any motion pertaining to future CalChess Scholastic Championships, only coaches will be voting.
